Incoming Freshmen invited to “Cougar Commitment” Night at West Side Leadership Academy
Current 8th graders and families are invited for a special registration event to explore the offerings at the high school
“The Gary Community School Corporation offers multiple pathways for high school scholars through local partnerships that are free for scholars enrolled at West Side,” said Kerchell Hobson, Director of Secondary Education for the Gary Schools. “GCSC students also receive priority for the limited slots available in Gary Area Career Center programs which has the only Aviation flight program in the region among other unique offerings.”
Eighth graders have the opportunity to earn credits during the summer allowing them to get a jumpstart on the required credits for high school. The District also boasts an Early College pathway, which allows students to earn an associate’s degree by the time they graduate high school. The district is currently working with IVY Tech, IU Northwest and Purdue Northwest for dual credit opportunities towards the Early College pathway.
During the summer, the Gary Area Career Center will offer exploratory classes for 8th graders who may be curious but undecided on a trade program.
Families with students entering the 9th grade are encouraged to attend the “Cougar Commitment Nights” to register their students early and to have priority to new and limited classes offered. The Gary Community School Corporation has open enrollment, and any family, regardless of where they reside, can enroll and attend any of the schools within the district.
