GCSC Students Return to School Buildings filled with New Furniture

(Gary, IND) – It’s been years and in some cases, decades since students in the Gary schools have enjoyed new classroom furniture. This all changed today when students returned from winter break. Thanks to several million dollars in state and federal funds, every school in the District is being outfitted with furniture that encourages, flexibility, collaborative learning and comfortability all wrapped in stylish designs.

Representatives from the furniture vendor Kay-Twelve joined District officials at Glen Park Academy (GPA) for Excellence in Learning Tuesday, January 3, 2023, 5002 Madison St. in Gary  to capture the reaction of students as they encountered the new layout and furniture designs.

“The looks on the children’s faces were priceless,” said GPA Principal Eric Worthington. “It was like Christmas all over again. They deserve to learn in an atmosphere that is most conducive to learning and triggers their creativity. This new furniture will help do this.”

Director of Elementary Education Dr. Esther Goodes was on hand to welcome students back for the second half of the school year.

“This style of furniture provides an outlet for our students to be innovative and creative while demonstrating what they have learned not only to their teachers but to one another while participating in group activities,” said Goodes. “It also gives them a sense of confidence and the ability to problem solve.”

The reactions ranged from big smiles to even screams as teachers and students flocked into the classrooms. One scholar indicated that the new furniture made her feel like “royalty.”
