(Gary, IND) – It was a historic day in the Gary Community School Corporation as thousands of scholars returned to a district that is no longer under State oversight. The official release date was July 1, which was also the start date of newly appointed Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Stokes.
“We are excited to welcome new and returning scholars to the district along with parents, families and community stakeholders,” said Stoke. “We remain laser-focused on teaching and learning youth in an environment that is both welcoming and safe, and I invite our community partners to align with us to support the success of every child.”
Stokes and other administrators criss-crossed the district visiting schools, greeting parents and students while ensuring a smooth first day in all buildings.
A special highlight was the kick-off of the WOW (Williams on Wheels) Bike Club at Daniel Hale Williams Elementary School. Students met at a designated location and biked to school with a special escort by the Gary Police Department.
“What an amazing and creative way to kick of the school year,” said GCSC spokesperson Chelsea Whittington who was on hand to capture the moment. “This is only the beginning of the many innovative initiatives the district has in store. We are excited for the students and families as they embark on another exciting chapter.”
