Gary Community School Corporation GEAR Up Garden Club donates Freshly Grown Greens in time for Thanksgiving

(Gary, IND) –Recently, the Gary Community School Corporation GEAR Up Garden Club donated 35 pounds of collard greens grown from the school community garden. The food donated created 140 servings given to families in need just in time for Thanksgiving.

“This is the first of many projects that the students will be able to do through their gardening efforts,” said Regional Director of Gear UP Anita Henderson-Johnson. “This is amazing to see. The Gary Community School Corporation is committed to providing a well-rounded education for our students and this includes opportunities for them to give back to their community.”

Johnson also mentioned that the project would not have been possible without the help of parent and community volunteers.

The Garden Clubs within the schools have expanded the focus on STEM education in the district and has created more opportunities for partnerships with community partners like the Purdue Extension – 4 H Program.

Lynda Bodie-Fernandez from the Purdue Extension has worked closely with many of the scholars throughout the district to establish gardening clubs over the past few years.

The Indiana 4-H Youth Development mission is to provide real-life educational opportunities for the youth. In Indiana, 4-H is spread across 92 counties delivering community clubs, afterschool programs, and school enrichment.

“I am proud of our GEAR Up students and all of the volunteers for taking the initiative to turn this program into a community game-changer,” said GCSC Manager Dr. Paige McNulty. “We are excited to see what other great things this enthusiastic group of students will achieve.”
