Gary Area Career Center Hosts First Open House of the Academic Year

Earlier this week, the Gary Area Career Center hosted its first Open House of the year for parents and families. Attendees were greeted by staff and teachers and introduced to a robust line-up of course offerings presented by Career Center Director Shelly Martin.

“We are preparing our children for careers through programs that offer hands-on experience and certifications,” said Martin. “We are indeed a critical part of the pipeline to fulfill employment needs in our community.”

During the GACC overview, Martin covered the program areas, uniform requirements, community partnerships with employers and available certifications. Parents were then invited to take a tour of the facility and meet the instructors. Enrollment at the Career Center has ballooned from just over 50 students in 2020 to more than 300 for the 2021-22

This school year, the Career Center added a component to introduce career paths to 8th graders. Two courses were created that cover a variety of occupations for them to explore.

“The sooner we introduce our children to employment options, the better they are prepared for the world of work after school” added Martin.

Some of the program offerings at GACC include culinary, cosmetology, barbering, construction, radio/TV, graphic design, aviation and early childhood development. Opportunities are also available for local businesses to partner with the Gary Area Career Center to offer internships and employment opportunities for students.

“We are all about partnerships with local businesses,” said Dr. Paige McNulty, Manager of the Gary Community School Corporation. “The resources, mentorships and opportunities they offer of children are endless. Ultimately, we want our graduates securing viable jobs right here in this city and surrounding communities.”
