Gary Community School Corporation Celebrates Presentation of
STEM of Excellence Award to Beveridge Elementary School
(Gary, IND) – Recently, the Gary Community School Corporation hosted a celebration to honor the staff and students of Beveridge Elementary School who contributed to the school earning the STEM of Excellence Award from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). The designation is bestowed to educational institutions for dedicated work in promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The event was filled with fun and engaging STEM activities along with refreshments and speakers who delivered congratulatory remarks.
“What an honor it is for Beveridge to reap the fruits of their labor,” said Dr. Esther Goodes, Chief of Schools for the Gary Community School Corporation. “They worked hard for this STEM Certification and their commitment has not gone unnoticed.”
The award will allow Beveridge to expand their STEM efforts, which aim to grow interest in careers in STEM at an early age for the scholars in the district.
This academic year, two elementary schools within the district — Beveridge Elementary and Glen Park Academy — earned IDOE STEM certification. Bailly STEM Academy received their certification in 2022 as the first school in Gary, IN with the accreditation.
According to the Indiana Department of Education, “Indiana’s Priorities for STEM Education in an effort to provide access to high-quality, integrated STEM instruction and to increase student participation and achievement related to integrated STEM learning opportunities. In a constantly evolving world, STEM education will prepare all students to contribute to society through innovative problem solving as the next generation of thinkers, creators, advocates, and entrepreneurs.”
“The district’s focus on STEM education makes us an attractive option for students who have a love a curiosity for science and math,” added Goodes. “The best news is we are just getting started.”
