Gary Schools Welcomes Long-Time On-Air Personality

Jeffrey Smith to WGVE 88.7 FM’s “Gary’s Voice of Education”

Smith brings Journalistic Expertise to New Role as Director of Broadcasting

(Gary, IND) – Today, the Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) welcomed a familiar media voice to the team at WGVE 88.7 FM. Long-time on-air personality Jeffrey Smith will assume the role of Director of Broadcasting for the station, which is housed at the Gary Area Career Center. Smith will assist in the development of a Radio/TV Broadcast curriculum for students while expanding on-air community programming.

“Jeff is just the shot in the arm we need as we continue to ramp up the course offerings and opportunities at the Career Center,” said GCSC Manager Dr. Paige McNulty. “Our students are fortunate to glean from his broadcast experience, and the community will still get to enjoy his witty, on-air personality during the morning show.”

Smith joins WGVE after a near 10-year run with Gary talk radio station WLTH 1370 AM. He was humbled by the well wishes extended by his colleagues.

“This was an opportunity that I had to seize,” said Smith. “This role affords me the opportunity to share my craft with aspiring broadcasters while still delivering news and commentary to a community filled with long-time supporters. I am simply overwhelmed by the support I have received as a result of this decision and can’t wait to start my new journey.”

Smith will officially take to the airwaves Monday, November 8th on the morning show weekdays from 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., which will include news, sports, commentary and a diverse line-up of in-studio guests from NWI and Chicagoland. Students enrolled in the Broadcast program at the Career Center will be able to observe Smith’s technique and join him on-air for various segments.

“We are all about offering our students the best,” said Shelly Martin, Director of GACC. “Our instructors bring real life experiences to the table and ably convey what a career in each discipline we offer looks like. We are excited to have Jeff onboard and even more excited for our youth.”

A graduate of both Hampton and Tuskegee Universities, Smith is also a proud alumni of Gary Roosevelt High School. As host of WLTH’s Afternoon News Desk, his knowledge and insight on current events and politics led to a swell in popularity and a strong following of listeners.

“It is my hope that listeners will take the time to discover the amazing platform we are developing at WGVE,” added Smith. “When they tune in, they’re not only supporting me, but Gary’s youth. In essence, it’s the same face, different place.”
