Social-Emotional Learning

What is Social Emotional Learning?

The Gary Community School Corporation believes that Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is crucial for students of all ages. SEL helps students understand and manage their emotions, as well as develop empathy for others. These skills are important for making responsible decisions, reaching personal goals, and building positive relationships.

Our aim with SEL is to create a positive school environment that has a positive impact on students both academically and behaviorally. The state of Indiana has identified six key SEL competencies that we focus on:

self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and optimistic thinking.
